Simply Good Sliders

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Manic:  You only have a few minutes to navigate the grocery store for quick dinner items that your entire family will like.

Managed:  Bring along one of my favorite tiny cook books called “Cook This, Not That” and you will be armed with good ingredients and good dinner ideas that can be easily prepared.

The bright green little book by David Zinczenko and Matt Goulding has been out for a couple of years now, so you have probably heard about it.  If you haven’t purchased a copy, this manic managed mom says to do so!

Two quick additions transformed my tiny burgers into one big hit in my home.

One idea came from my own brain and that was to season the burgers with a steak seasoning that my husband uses for grilling steaks.  The other idea, caramelized onions, came from the book.  Both made my burgers terrific and tasty.   Plus onions have fiber, Vitamin C, Vitamin B6 and potassium in every serving.

Stuff You Need

1 to 2 lbs. hamburger meat – I like lean

4 medium red onions, sliced

1 tablespoon butter

2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar

cooked bacon

My family’s fixin’s:  dill pickle slices, lettuce, tomato slices, mustard

cheddar cheese

dash sea salt & pepper

Weber Chicago Steak Seasoning

mini buns

1.  Season hamburger with the Weber steak seasoning, make into mini patties for sliders and cook your burgers.

2.  Next make the yummy caramelized onions from the awesome cook book, “Cook This, Not That!”   I followed the book and melted the butter over medium-low heat.  Then add  the sliced onions.  Add a dash of salt and cook onions until they look caramelized, about 20 to 30 minutes.  Towards the end of the cooking time, add the vinegar and a pinch of black pepper and cook for another 2 to 3 minutes.  Here are my before and after pictures, so you can see the difference in the onions.

 3.  Now you are ready to assemble your sliders.  If you want to try my family’s favorite fixin’s, then build your burger this way:

*Melt cheddar cheese on patty, add caramelized onions, 1/2 of bacon slice, tomato slice, lettuce, dill pickle slices and mustard.

This sliders recipe turned my manic dinner hour into a managed meal that made my family smile!  I highly recommend adding “Cook This, Not That” to your cook book collection.

Comments

  1. I made these this weekend, too! Found the little buns at Trader Joe’s and thought the kids would love them. We made them together and even hand cut the fries. Fun family times!

    • I am so glad you left a comment here, Kim because I should have mentioned that we also got our mini buns at Trader Joe’s! However, we did not hand cut the fries. I am impressed!

  2. Lisa Walton says:

There are also several other books in the series by David Zinczenko and Matt Goulding. A restaurant survival guide, a supermarket survival guide, and even one specifically designed to get Kids to eat healthier.
    Great suggestions!!

    • Thanks Lisa! I knew about the restaurant guide (love it!) and the supermarket one, but I didn’t know about the healthy kids book by those guys. I’ll have to get that one because my kids love those books, even the ones geared for adults. Thanks so much for leaving your helpful comment!
